2024 IAHA National Conference

The 2024 IAHA National Conference recognises the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the diversity of our membership, as well as interdisciplinary actions within the allied health sector. IAHA also recognises how sustained holistic, strengths-based approaches to health and wellbeing can achieve health equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Cultural Responsiveness in Allyship

 

This interactive and reflective workshop will explore the nature of allyship. Allyship in the IAHA context refers to the actions, behaviours, and practices that we take to support, amplify, and advocate with First Nations peoples. It is a lifelong process of learning, listening and self-reflection.

 

In this workshop, we will discuss:

 

The meaning and expression of the six IAHA capabilities in Cultural Responsiveness as a basis for allyship;

  • Respect for the Centrality of Cultures
  • Self awareness
  • Proactivity
  • Inclusive Engagement
  • Leadership
  • Responsibility and Accountability

Ways of taking action;

  • advocating within our community, our sphere of influence
  • challenging ignorance
  • mobilising others in allyship

Committing to allyship;

 

In this section, participants will complete an allyship skills and challenges self-assessment and develop a personal action plan for their allyship journey.

Join other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men in honouring our past and present to empower our futures through connectedness and our ways of knowing being and doing.  Explore strategies for thriving, self care and social and emotional wellbeing in a culturally safe space.  The Yarning Circle will ensure delegates have the opportunity to practice sitting in a Yarning Circle, fostering mutual support and establishing a collective space grounded in shared values, which explores and embraces cultural knowledges, diversity, and celebrating the interconnectedness of our communities. By actively participating in this Yarning Circle, delegates have the opportunity to deepen their cultural understanding, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to the promotion of cultural safety and responsiveness within their respective fields.

SOLD OUT -  Warriparinga Cultural & Historical Tour and Boomerang Throwing Workshop

This tour will take you on a walk around the stunning Warriparinga Wetlands and the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre. You will have the opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the historical and cultural significance of the site, learning about the traditional Kaurna uses for the area. Our experienced tour guides will offer to answer any of your questions while they escort you through a range of stops. The our local Aboriginal guide will teach you all there is to know about Boomerangs. Their uses, construction and types will be explained, furthering a deeper understanding of this ancient tool. The culturally significant Warriparinga Wetlands provides you with the perfect backdrop to learn this ancient art. You will even get the opportunity to learn the proper Boomerang throwing technique at the end of the experience!
